Pictures and Stories From Neodesha, Kansas Residents
Past and Present

I have added the obituary of Wayne Oliver Coltrain (NHS 40), who passed away last June. He was born and raised in Neodesha, attended K-State for two years, then helped farm for four years during WWII. He then returned to K-State and graduated in 1946. He also earned his Master's Degree at K-State and taught Vo-Ag at NHS for 31 years. All four of his children are NHS Alumni: David 1960, Karen 1972, Amy 1974 and Sally 1979. A copy of his obituary is posted here: Coltrain

Here we are, busy trying to complete our shopping before Christmas and looking forward to seeing friends and relatives that have come for miles to visit. We spend more money than we have, knowing we have bought just the right gifts. While we finish off that Christmas ham there are many individuals in the Neodesha area that have no presents. No tree. Nothing to cook or eat. No relatives to visit. I urge you to join me in making a contribution to the Neodesha Ministerial Association. They will be preparing 250 food baskets for needy families in the Neodesha and Altoona areas. Their goal is $5,000 to do this. Your tax deductible contribution will be greatly appreciated. Unlike other charities, this donation does not have a lot of overhead expenses taken out. Deliveries will be made December 17th, so please send your contribution soon to:

In late 1951 Paul and Dorothy Rose Guess moved to Neodesha as owners of the Neodesha Daily Sun. Although busy raising her family, Dorothy published 254 columns in her weekly observations "Dot's Dashes". Her son Doug and his wife Ruth Ann of Lawrence, Kansas, have now finalized the publication of her observations, complete with pictures and their summary of each years events. Doug and Ruth Ann also generously help finance this web site. I have received a copy of the 172 page publication from them, "We're Glad to Be Here ... Dot's Dashes, A small community in the 1950's" Here is a copy of Doug & Ruth Ann taken from the book:

You may purchase a copy in Neodesha at Porter Drug. The proceeds will go to the MS funds.

They included the identities of the dads and you can view them both here: BARNEYBALL

Thanks to Allen (NHS 63) and Betsy Zadorozny for their generous contribution to help keep NeodyGrads in the black.

The NHS Class of 1963 recently met for their 60th birthdays all at one time, thanks to Phil and Dona Griffith. I have posted pictures of the Las Vegas event on this website. Phil's friends also were invited, so not everyone you see is a classmate or their spouse/significant other. Older computers may balk at the rough way I put it together, but here is the link: http://www.neodygrads.com/pages/vegas.html . Click the small pictures to see the big ones. In addition, Dan Hoobler has sent some of his pictures and are available here: http://www.neodygrads.com/pages/vegas_dan.html

Joe Wilcox has been sailing his sailboat around the world and is currently on the next leg of his adventure. You can get the details here: http://www.shepherdmoonvoyages.com/

An interesting article about Neodesha and Cobalt: http://www.inc.com/magazine/20040801/workforce.html

I have been in contact with Neodesha Hendley who was named after our fair town.

I have gotten e-mail from Chris Hopping, whose grandparents ran a feed store and creamery at the turn of the century in Neodesha.

There has to be a story here somewhere. A country band in Germany has been formed and they go by the name Neodesha! They have a website here:
  http://www.neodesha.de .

An attempt has been made to list Neodesha area obituaries from the past for those studying their family history. I am not sure it will ever be finished, but many hours have been put in by volunteers converting the Rankin Library file cards and have over 8,000 entries here:
GRAVEYARDS

I would appreciate any address corrections for my mailing, which will be soon. Thanks, Dwyane Hicks, dwyanehicks@hotmail.com 25319 Bancock Court, Magnolia, TX 77355 (281)252-6033. Dwyane also sent me more details for their 40th reunion and included information about the geology of Neodesha and surrounding area that was written by Don Hemme. In addition, Dwyane sent facts about early Neodesha. All 3 can be found here: Dwyane

The NHS Class of 2000 will be holding it's 5 year reunion this summer. Adrienne Sandbothe Eastwood is looking for addresses, e-mails and material to be used. They can contact her at aeastwood@neodesha.k12.ks.us or contact me for her address and telephone.

December, 2004: In the early 1950's I would walk from South School to the bowling alley to watch my mother, OcieLee, bowl since we would have had no one at home to watch us. I recently scanned in 3 pictures taken of the team, the alley, and an awards banquet. This bowling alley was in the basement in the northwest corner of 4th Street and Wisconsin. Many of us later knew the corner as Marie's Tavern. My mother's Bright Spot Cafe team consisted of Mildred Powell, OcieLee Elkins, Earline Olds, Marge Morgan, and  Helen Watson. Click on the word Bowling to see the pictures: BOWLING

Prominent citizen Ed (Glenn Edwin) Worley died on Thursday, November 11, 2004.  He began in 1946 working as a bookkeeper for Neodesha First National Bank and finished as President and CEO of the bank. He graduated from NHS in 1946.

Most of us are feeling pretty good right now. Another year pretty well gone. Not without problems, but food on the table and a little loose change in the pocket. Many of us had a nice holiday dinner for Thanksgiving and are beginning to buy gifts and make plans for Christmas. Unfortunately in Neodesha there are many who are not. There won't be a street full of cars from relatives driving in for Christmas, or home from college for the holidays. There is no budget for a coat or warm clothing. But this is also a time when many of us donate to our favorite charities. Unfortunately some of them use over 90% of the funds for "overhead" with the remaining 10% being used for the purpose intended. I have the perfect solution for you. The Neodesha Ministerial Association operates a food pantry there, but they also work each holiday season to see that needy families are cared for. No high operating expenses, funds spent "locally", even mine from Ohio. You may send contributions to the following address:

Neodesha Ministerial Association
PO Box 441
Neodesha, KS 66757

Tonya Bell, NHS 1995, is beginning work on their 10 year reunion planned for June 11th of 2005. She could use addresses, e-mails, and old photographs for the reunion. And I would suspect a lot of help, too! Right now you can contact her at btbell@hit.net for details. Or contact me for her address and telephone.

Here is a link to an article published last April in the Wichita Eagle about the Refinery and ground pollution: REFINERY

Ann Bicknell Bennett has sent me information provided in part by Sandy Clanton Kingston concerning their upcoming 40th NHS Class Reunion for the Class of 64. I have put a page together with more detailed information she sent for the Mid-September event here: 64 40th Reunion

Marsha Reynolds O'Conner called and Ann Bicknell Bennett emailed me about the passing last Saturday of Nancy Kounter, NHS 64. Interment will be in Neodesha and a graveyard service will be held this Saturday (August 14th)

Pattie Bailey reports that Judy Doub, NHS 62, was featured as one of Wichita's Best Athletes in the August 8th edition of the Wichita Eagle.

JUDY DOUB....Doub's archery career stretches nearly 40 years, even before the common usage of compound bows.  Especially over the past 10 years she's been extremely active in field, indoor and marked 3-D competitions.  "I like shooting with all the different people," said Doub.  "It's also a good stress reliever.  You can take all your frustrations out on the target."

I have just transcribed the second article written by Kate Winter Pingrey around 1946 and reprinted in the Neodesha newspaper in the 1960's I believe. This second article is on the history of the schools: HISTORY 2 and the first article is here HISTORY 1. There are at least 6 in all.

John Worthington Deer died July 19, 2004 at the age of 89. He is survived by son (John) Michael Deer of Glenwood Springs and daughter Pattie Bailey of Neodesha, sister Betty Bacon of Neodesha and brother Elmer Deer of Hoyt, Kansas. A copy of his obituary is here: J. W. Deer Obituary and an article on his father, John Wesley Deer is HERE.
Pattie has forwarded the eulogy she and her brother wrote and presented at his funeral. Click here:
EULOGY.

From Ann & Robert Schnetzler: Sid Hamilton (Class of 44)  died at Solvang, CA on 4/3/03.  Cause of death was liver cancer.  Sid's father was city clerk for Neodesha for many years. His wife Flo Hamilton continues her home in Solvang.  Many will remember Flo as Dr Frank Moorhead's nurse in the 1950's.

I have also gotten the candid photos of the 2003 Class of 63 Reunion onto the internet. Names are now provided below the pictures, so you may have to scroll down to read them. Connie Reece Selgath submitted seven of these: 63 40th 2003

Dean Cook and Marilyn Smith Graham, both NHS 63 classmates, have sent me two lists about what it was like growing up "back then". Authors unknown. Here is the link: BACK THEN

Here is a picture of the harbor tug YTB-815, otherwise known as the USS Neodesha:

I have added a good 100 pictures to the photo album section: ALBUMS

Mrs. Francis McDaniel was a kindergarten teacher at South School for many years. She hired me one summer to paint some of the interior of her house, a large two story home that sat at 5th and Mill Street. It was a bit spooky because she had a son at one time that was mentally handicapped. As he aged he became more and more a major problem for her and her husband. One day the husband shot the son and himself in this house and both died. Mrs. McDaniel was a kind and caring teacher and will always be remembered as my idea of what a real 'teacher' should be.

Mrs. McDaniel would take her students out and have them photographed wearing their Halloween costumes or on other special occasions. One series of the pictures was supposedly taken in 1954, which would make them NHS 1966 by my calculations. There is also a picture of 3 girls with their high school graduation gowns on and another picture of a group dressed in sunflower costumes for some event. I would appreciate identification of any of the children. These old snapshots were sold on eBay, but here are my copies:

NHS Graduate Judy Norris sent of picture of the meeting of the Fall & Verdigris Rivers:

My brother, Jerry Elkins, recently attended his 1959 NHS Reunion held in Neodesha for the 45th Reunion. Here is a link to his candid photos, or you may reach them through the Reunion page: 1959 REUNION

In addition to the task of getting annuals scanned and entered, I finally got Bobby Sheldon's (NHS 67) letter that he sent ages ago with pictures set up. Click on Sheldon: SHELDON

Ada Belle (Hunter) Davis met with her classmates in June of 2003 for her NHS Class of 1953 50th Reunion. Shortly thereafter she sent me pictures of the picnic held at the rural home of Bob & Shirley Huser. After only one year I have been able to finally get these ready for the web. Ada Belle has been a tremendous asset in putting this web site together and it would be far less than it is if it were not for her contributions and input, both with material and monetarily. The class of 1953 also made a contribution to help keep this web site available for all. Click the picture below to view her candid photos:

Also a thank you to Dennis and Peggy (Talley) Winfrey for their recent contribution to this website.

Dorothy (Adell) Parsons has sent me a picture of the Class of 1944 60 Year Reunion held this June in Neodesha. To see a big picture of it click this picture:

David Lechliter NHS 68 and his brother Gary Lechliter NHS 69 wrote to report the death of their mother, Mrs. Laura Lechliter. She passed away April 30, 2004. They resided in Neodesha from 1964-1969. She was well known in the area at that time.

I just added complete school annuals for 1948 and 1952. Also I have some senior pictures from the 1959 annual, all under YEARBOOKS.

The Principal of South School for many years, Paul Beckner, has moved from Neodesha to a retirement home in Hutchinson with his wife. They will be near their daughter Karen Beckner Gausman, and within driving distance of their other daughter Janet Beckner Roth of Lawrence. Here is their new address:

Mr. & Mrs. Paul Beckner
Elm Grove Estates #164
2416 Brentwood Street
Hutchinson, KS 67502-5000

Glen Delay was Neodesha Superintendent of Schools for 23 years. He had 3 daughters, the most famous of which was Dorothy DeLay. She taught violin at Julliard School of Music in New York for many years. She had 2 sisters, Louise DeLay Carlson and Nellis DeLay Harvuot, NHS 1935. Louise has informed me that Nellis passed away yesterday and is survived by son Clifford and daughter Susan. She will be buried beside her husband in Chautauqua, NY.

Doug and Ruth Ann Guess have sent me a copy of "Dot's Dashes". They have compiled the 235 columns Dorothy Rose Guess (Mrs. Paul Guess) that she wrote for the Neodesha Daily Sun from 1951 through 1957. At that point her Multiple Sclerosis, diagnosed in 1952, forced her to end her notes about Neodesha, the area, and the world outside of our little community. The Guess's may publish the works and are considering a first run of 500 copies. She details her experience with moving to Neodesha, boxed cake mixes, and raising her children. In addition, the book is divided by year and the Guess's have added a summary of events for each year.

J. Leon Fawcett (NHS 38) passed away March 11, 2004 at the age of 83. He is survived by wife Hilda and son Dr. Michael Fawcett of Los Osos, CA. His daughter Deena died July 20, 1991.

And finally, I will be moving to Ohio soon, so there will have to be even fewer updates. Please bear with me.

Tonya (Peck) Cox (daughter of Loren & Romona Peck, sister of Troy, Randy and Terry Peck), NHS 83, has sent some newspaper clippings that her mother saved:

Sally Akins Stockton of Grove, Oklahoma, graduated from Neodesha High School in 1958.

She has sent us some pictures from North Lawn. Her grandfather was 'Mac' McKellar who helped build the North Lawn School, staying on as janitor nearly 35 years. His son, and Sally's uncle, was Park McKellar that worked at Central School and the High School. Just click on her picture to go to that page.

In addition to the task of getting annuals scanned and entered, I finally got Bobby Sheldon's letter that he sent ages ago with pictures set up. Click on Sheldon: SHELDON

In July of 1953 Kermit Schuman printed a small brochure about living in Neodesha. You can find it here: SCHUMAN

Randy Peck of Neodesha has informed me that one of our most famous natives, Grimes Poznikov (nee Grimes Poznik NHS 1964) is living on the streets of San Francisco. He is no longer the Human Jukebox on the Wharf, and his condition is very poor at this point. I have made Randy's letter into a web page for the curious and maybe we can find a way to get him some shelter. He is more or less crazy, but usually in a fairly nice way. Usually. Here is the link to the information sent by Randy. I have much higher resolution graphics if anyone desires them: GRIMES POZNIKOV

Lavonne Hicks Douty and Welcome Hicks Wayne, daughters of John and Wilma Hicks, have sent me pictures and information about their parents. After many months, I have gotten them processed and a short article written. You can read about them and see paintings by Mr. Hicks as well as view pictures from their past here:
JOHN & WILMA HICKS

I have put together some information I have had since last summer from a fine gentleman that grew up in war-torn Frankfort, Germany. But hey, we were supposed to hate those guys. We sent bombers. We filled prisoner-of-war camps with them. So what is it with this rosy little bit of fluff about a wartime German? He was even a Hitler Youth! Here is what he, my friend Helmut, has to say: Helmut Lessing.

I have a new page added to Neodesha history. My mother is to blame. She kept all sorts of old newspaper clippings and pictures. She still does. She saved a section of the Neodesha newspaper from a set of articles written by the sister of Francesca Winter, Kate Winter Pingrey. I scanned copies in at the museum too. I have converted the first of these to MS Word. You can read it here HISTORY 1. I still have 4 boxes of articles and pictures to sort through. Here is the second article HISTORY 2.

We have a new addition to our website, as Bonita (Bunnie) Killion Reece has written a nice piece about growing up in Neodesha in 1920's, 30's, & 40's. Here is a link to her article: REECE

If you had been a Nazarene Church minister in Neodesha in the late 1950's and 60's, and you reached retirement age, would you:
1: Retire from preaching from the same pulpit week after week after week.
2. Move and live near your grandchildren.
3. Form a large group of talented people and travel throughout the world, building, furnishing, and providing for mission schools to educate children in those impoverished countries.

Well, as you can probably guess, Reverend Malcolm Eudaley did all three. He is extremely busy near Kansas City securing funds and administering them for a great many small countryside schools. Donations are about $10,000 per school, but this varies from school to school. To read about his work, here is his web site and contact information:
